    • Haehnle Sanctuary

    Join the Tuesday morning group for a visit to the Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary.  Gary Siegrist, Tuesday Group founder, Haehnle committee chair, and long-time Sanctuary volunteer, will lead a 2 – 3-hour walk, explain the latest habitat restorations, and describe most if not all the birds and plants the group sees. Jackson Audubon manages and maintains the Sanctuary for its owner, the Michigan Audubon Society. 

    We will meet at 9:00 AM at the Sanctuary.

    The Haehnle Sanctuary is northeast of Jackson, on the north side of Seymour Road and less than a mile east of Wooster Road.

    • Pittsfield Preserve

    Joann Ballbach will lead a tour of Pittsfield Preserve, near Saline.  There are a variety of habitats. We'll skirt a farm field, pass a spring frog pond, and go through a small woods. Then it's through a field to loop a larger woods. Exiting the woods, we'll circle a new pond to go back past the farm field. The area is prone to flooding, so be prepared if there's been recent rain. Two short sections of the trail have been shin deep in spring--you may want to bring a walking stick to navigate the stepping logs or some muck boots.  

    Meet at the Eastside Meijer lot in Jackson at 9:00 am. or an the Marton Rd. parking lot at 9:30.  

    The Preserve parking lot is is just south of Morgan Rd. Take the State St. exit south from 94, turn left (east) on Morgan then right (south) on Marton. The lot will be on the left.

    • Lefglen Nature Sanctuary

    Join the Tuesday morning group for a trip to Michigan Nature Association's Lefglen Nature Sanctuary in Grass Lake.  Preserve information is available HERE.  MNA representative Rachel Maranto will lead us for a walk on the property.   At this time of year we should be able to see blooms like blazing star, grass of parnassus, and fringed gentian.

    NOTE:  in order to see some rare wildflowers, she will be taking us off the trail.  It is a fen, so bring calf or knee high boots for this part of the walk. 

    NEW TIME:  Meet at Lefglen on the east side of Wolf Lake Road, by Wolf Lake at 10 a.m.

    An American Icon: Utah’s Red Rock Canyonlands

    Clayton Daughenbaugh, Midwest Organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance  will present "An American Icon: Utah’s Red Rock Canyonlands."  The talk will include the land and wildlife of Utah and how we can help save this large national treasure.

     Meetings will begin with a social time at 6:30 PM with short meeting and program at 7:00 PM.

    Bring recyclables (magazines, feeders, feeders, etc.) to the program.

    Hawkwatch!

    Join JAS for a trip down to Erie Metropark to watch migrating raptors.  We will leave from the Eastside Meijer at 9 AM.  We expect to return by about 5 PM. 

    Bring a lunch, water, snacks, sunscreen and a chair.  The location is the boat dock.  Picnic tables in sun and shaded areas are available. Restrooms (flush porcelain) are within 200 feet.

    This will be in the Lake Erie Metropark.  Parking pass ($10) will be required for vehicle entry.  Park info available on their website.

    Join the Tuesday Morning Group for a trip lead by Mickey Kress to W.K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary near Augusta, MI.  We will be looking for waterfowl on this visit.  Lunch will be at Territorial Brewing Co., Battle Creek

    Birding Eastern Panama

    Lathe Claflin will present " Birding Eastern Panama." We will see Harpy Eagles and Sapphire-throated Hummingbirds,along with many more birds of the area.  This had been scheduled for 2017-18 season but this tropical presentation was preempted by...snow.

    Cranes, Colors, Cabernet, & Cider Festival

    Seymour Road, Jackson - use GPS coordinates: 42.322, -84.289

    There will be bird walks and talks on the natural history of cranes, followed by a viewing tour in search of cranes in the area. 

    Schedule:

    • 12 p.m.- Walking tour; this tour will be lead by a Haehnle naturalist and will be 1 to 1 ½ hours in duration.
    • 2 p.m.- Walking tour; this tour will be lead by a Haehnle naturalist and will be 1 to 1 ½ hours in duration.
    • 4:00 p.m. - Lecture on natural history of the Sandhill Crane by a Haehnle naturalist.
    • 4:30 p.m. - Car tour; to view cranes in surrounding fields lead by Haehnle naturalist. Tour will be 1 to 1 ½ hours then back to observation hill to watch cranes returning to roost at sanctuary.
    • 4:30 p.m. to dark - Wildlife and crane viewing at observation hill with Haehnle naturalists.

    Holly Vaughn of the Michigan DNR presents "Owls of Michigan." Holly's program will talk about the 11 Michigan species and include their biology, behaviors, and diet.

    Live Birds of Prey

    Barb and Joe Rogers presents "Live Birds of Prey". The Rogers have been involved with rehabilitating raptors for over 35 years along with the peregrine falcon reintroduction in the UP. THEY WILL HAVE LIVE BIRDS AT THE PROGRAM.
