WELCOME to the Phyllis Haehnle Sanctuary (pronounced hane-lee). Hosting a wildlife spectacle: the annual gathering of Sandhill Cranes prior to migration. With a panoramic view of the Mud Lake Marsh surrounded by the fall colors of trees, few wildlife wonders can rival the sight of several thousand cranes flocking to this sanctuary on a late October afternoon.

Michigan Audubon Position on Crane Hunting in Michigan
Phyllis Haehnle Memorial Sanctuary is located 5 miles northeast of Jackson, Michigan. This Michigan Audubon sanctuary was founded in 1955 and is managed by MA and by volunteers of the Jackson Audubon Society. Habitats include deciduous forest, grasslands, hardwood swamp, fen, marsh, vernal pool, Eagle Lake, and the Portage River. Peak season to view Sandhill Cranes is late October to mid-November the hour before sunset. This is when thousands of cranes can be seen entering the marsh area. Open all year dawn to dusk |
